Álvarez, known for his effective horror-thrillers like Don’t Breathe and the Evil Dead remake, brings his knack for suspense and gritty action to Romulus. The film shines in its ability to craft tense, claustrophobic set-pieces, particularly in the latter half, where the action ramps up, and the characters’ survival instincts are put to the test. The visual effects and creature design pay homage to the franchise’s origins, with the Xenomorphs retaining their menacing, iconic presence, especially in a memorable zero-gravity sequence that cleverly utilises their acidic blood.
However, while Romulus is technically proficient and often exciting, it struggles with originality. The plot treads well-worn paths, with few surprises or new ideas to set it apart from previous entries. The characters, apart from Rain and Andy, are largely forgettable, serving more as fodder for the Xenomorphs than as fully developed individuals. The film’s reliance on nostalgia, from the callbacks to the original films to the resurrection of familiar elements, often feels more dedicated to fan service than meaningful storytelling.
Despite these shortcomings, Alien: Romulus delivers a competent and entertaining addition to the franchise. It may not reach the iconic status of Scott’s and Cameron’s classics, but Alien: Romulus is a well-crafted film honouring its predecessors while delivering enough thrills to justify its existence. It captures the essence of what made the early Alien films so compelling—namely, the relentless tension and the primal fear of the unknown—while updating the visuals for a modern audience. Yet, one can’t help but wish that Álvarez had taken a few more risks to push the series into new, uncharted territory. For franchise fans, it’s a welcome, if somewhat familiar, return to the dark, unforgiving world of Xenomorphs and corporate greed.
