Review: Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) is a gutsy young woman, who is slated to marry a handsome prince but not before she’s pitted against a dragon with fatal breath. That’s basically the one line plot of this dark fantasy but how better to mark international women’s month than with this Neflix release about a consummate heroine, who can stand up for herself and her people. The premise of Damsel appears to be inspired by the classical Greek yarn of Theseus and the Minotaur, where a youth is dispatched as a human tribute and finds himself on the menu of a monster. But this tale is injected with enough originality - including a plot full of surprises, magical settings and well-defined characters - to set it apart.

Millie Bobby Brown plays Eoldie - a noblewoman whose land is facing poverty. She honours a request by her father (Ray Winstone) to wed the prince of a thriving kingdom. Her groom-to-be, Henry of Aurea (Nick Robinson) - is charming and endearing. But his mother – Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) – appears to be the dubious type. Elodie’s stepmother Lady Bayford (Angela Bassett) is unsettled by the royal matriarch’s nature and unsuccessfully attempts to call off the union. After the exchange of vows and bands, the new princess is lured into a ritual atop a mountain, where she’s in for an evil surprise. Barely surviving fiery emissions from a dragon, Elodie discovers magical help and hope in this hostile interior.

 Revelations about vendettas emerge, leading to aggressive confrontations.Brown who made a mark with ‘Stranger Things’, shows she has the wherewithal to star in a feature film. In so doing, she has graduated from a girl with psychic powers to a warrior princess. Also, Wright delivers a delicious performance as the wily Queen. Meanwhile, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo from the 28 Weeks Later fame, has shown that he is comfortable crafting movies with sombre supernatural themes. Breathtaking cinematography (Larry Fong), eye-popping CGI and taut editing are the film’s other plusses.

Overall, ‘Damsel’ offers a compelling twist on the classic fantasy narrative, featuring strong performances, surprising plot twists, and impressive visuals. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo brings a dark and enchanting world to life, making this one a captivating watch for the fans of fantasy.
