Review: Crimes against women combined with revenge drama can make for a thrilling watch. Director Kumar Raj uses these two compelling themes in portraying Meena’s (Rekha Rana) story and juxtaposing it with her role as Ameena in a drama called Yahan Ameena Bikti Hai. While Meena is raped by three men, who went scot-free 15 years ago on account of being minors, she teams up with a group of vigilantes to bring them to book. On the other hand, her character of a minor girl, Ameena, is being married off to a rich old Arab and has a bleak end.
The film attempts to highlight misogyny and how women are victims of injustice, some orchestrated by their own family members. But the narrative, screenplay, direction, and production value and treatment fall short in presenting a gripping tale. Interchanging between Meena's and Ameena’s stories and playwright Aftab (Anant Mahadevan) interacting with the latter’s spectre must have seemed interesting on paper but did not translate effectively on screen.
Ameena’s story is more relatable between the two, as her lower-middle-class parents struggle to raise six daughters and a son and force her to marry for money. Rekha Rana also performs and emotes better in this part, especially as the white-clothed phantom figure. As she goes to West Africa and France after
the three culprits, her action scenes are poorly executed and lack finesse. The court trial and the resolution seem too convenient and have not been thought through. Cliched dialogues, heavy use of poetry, and songs breaking out repeatedly take away from the movie’s appeal. With the exception of a hip-hop song, the music is not memorable either.
The film offers a glimpse into women's struggles but fails to deliver an impactful story or a compelling narrative.
