Prey Review: With a taut runtime, director Dan Trachtenberg knows there’s no room for unnecessary backstory. Along with co-writer Patrick Aison, he trusts his audience to rely on Predator lore, where it’s well established why the formidable extraterrestrial beings view Earth as their hunting grounds. By keeping the premise simple enough, Trachtenberg and Aison provide just enough groundwork for yet another Predator sequel. Instead, they focus on why we should care about this particular one by keeping it narrowed down to Naru. We quickly understand her desire to prove herself as a young warrior amidst her male counterparts. Although her brother Taabe acknowledges her abilities as a tracker & healer, he struggles to see her potential as a hunter. The stakes may be small and personal, but they matter a lot to Naru, and by extension, to the audience. Amber Midthunder’s performance serves to ramp up the emotion and tension around her character’s ambition.
But all that aside, how can a Native American girl with basic weapons stand up to a technologically superior Predator? It’s a classic David vs Goliath scenario, and Trachtenberg doesn’t resort to plot armour around the protagonist. He opts for logical and creative ways to play out the encounters. ‘Prey’ also features gripping fight choreography that neither sacrifices nor glorifies the gore factor expected from a Predator film. The unforgiving backdrop of Comanche territory adds to the experience, framed with thoughtful cinematography that presents scenic landscapes against the ruthless wilderness. Rounded off by haunting sound design and a score that amplifies the tension, 'Prey' has a solid mix of ingredients for an intense action film. The only nitpick is the Predator’s design probably isn't as intimidating compared to the original we know and love to fear, but it’s a minor and highly subjective preference.
Multiple attempts featuring numerous big-name casts have failed to capture the gritty and gruesome impact of the first film featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Dan Trachtenberg sticks to the basic premise and infuses new (fluorescent green) blood into the franchise. ‘Prey’ executes all the elements almost seamlessly to make it the most worthy prequel to ‘Predator’.
